Today is the last opportunity for voters to cast early ballots before Election Day.

And Hall County Elections Director Charlotte Sosebee is hoping for a crowd.

She said Thursday was the highest turnout so far, with 1,936 voting. A total of 21,536 have cast ballots since early voting began Oct. 15.

In 2008, 27,487 people voted early, when the process included 45 days of early voting. Sosebee had projected 25,800 would vote early this year. She’s expecting almost 30,000 will vote Tuesday.

“I would definitely urge people to vote early,” she said. “And I say that because in years of elections, emergencies happen during the weekend causing some people to have to go out of town, their jobs call them out at the last minute — and there being only one day of voting and it being the last day of voting, you just don’t want an emergency to come up and hinder you from that process.”

She said she expects lines on Election Day that may not move as quickly as the line at the Hall County Government Center, which includes more workers and machines than precincts will have.

Early voting is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at the center at 2875 Browns Bridge Road in Gainesville. Voting on Tuesday will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at local precincts.

Besides the presidential election, the ballot includes an open seat in the U.S. House 9th District as well as two statewide public service commission races. Voters also will make decisions on two ballot questions, one that would create a state board to approve charter schools and another that would allow state agencies to enter into multiyear rental agreements.
