Three Democrats against tapping Savannah River for Atlanta's needs

As the Savannah River flowed just yards away, three Georgia gubernatorial candidates debated in Martinez on Thursday on whether water from the river might one day be used to supply Atlanta's needs.

A question on interbasin transfers, the process by which water is transported from one water source to another in order to meet needs during droughts in urban areas like Atlanta, was the first posed to potential residents of the governor's mansion during an environmental forum at Savannah Rapids Pavilion.

The candidates in attendance, Democrats DuBose Porter, Carl Camon and David Poythress, all oppose interbasin transfers.
