Challenger defeats Banks commission chairman

In Banks County, voters overwhelmingly defeated incumbent county commission chairman Gene Hart. His opponent, Milton Dalton, got 2,029 votes to Hart’s 680 in Tuesday’s Republican primary.

Hart was first elected four years ago. Voters in Banks re-elected Sheriff Charles Chapman, who received 55 percent of the vote against challenger Carlton Speed.

In the only other contested county race in Banks, John Williams was re-elected to the board of education by fewer than 100 votes over David W. Martin.

Voter turnout was 36.85 percent in Banks County, according to unofficial vote totals.
