One of the drivers in the Monday crash on Athens Highway has been charged with driving under the influence and failure to yield, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Matthew Roberts, 34, of Gainesville was charged after a collision with Hugh Parks, 67, of Clermont around 3 p.m. Monday on Athens Highway and Gaines Mill Road.

Roberts was driving southbound on Athens Highway in a 1990 Dodge van, said GSP Trooper Jonathan Stamey, as Parks drove northbound in a red Ford Ranger.

“The van failed to yield while turning left,” Stamey said about Roberts’ turn onto Gaines Mill Road.

After impact, Parks’ pickup overturned, while Roberts’ van spun around, Stamey said.

Gasoline leaked from the car, adding to the debris of ladders, tools and glass.

Parks was transferred to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for minor injuries, according to GSP Sgt. Anthony Coleman. Roberts was uninjured.

No information was provided by Northeast Georgia Medical Center regarding Parks’ condition.
