The Regions Bank at Jesse Jewell and E.E. Butler parkways was evacuated briefly this morning after a report of a fire at the building, which overlooks downtown.

The Gainesville Fire Department received a call of a fire on the fifth floor.

Fire Chief Jon Canada said crews didn't find a fire, but did find light smoke on the fifth floor.

"At this time it appears to have been some type of internal electrical surge," Canada said.

Fire crews and an electrician are continuing to investigate the cause of the surge.

"We did find some surge protectors that were burned up. There's some possibility of some computers and other things that received some damage," Canada said.

Employees of all floors, other than the fifth, were permitted to reenter the building.
