Debate between Gainesville council candidates set for Thursday

With two longtime Gainesville City Council members stepping down this year, the Nov. 3 election to replace them may be rather competitive. A debate between the candidates is set for 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Gainesville Civic Center, 830 Green St. NE. Four candidates are seeking to fill the seat of Myrtle Figueras in Ward 3, a historically minority community. Lemuel Betancourt Barbara Brooks Andre Cheek Montine Whelchel Smith Two men are vying to for the Ward 2 post held by Bob Hamrick for almost 50 years.
