Dealership fire damage limited thanks to burst pipe
A fire Monday night damaged a building at Hayes Chrysler dealership on Frontage Road in Oakwood.

A water line bursting may have helped prevent fire from spreading Monday night at the Hayes Chrysler dealership on Frontage Road in Oakwood.

Lightning from heavy storms moving through the area may have sparked the fire at 9:09 p.m., said Chad Black, Hall County deputy fire chief.

Fire was contained to part of a storage room in the middle of the building over the parts department. Damage to the building has been estimated at $25,000 to $30,000, which doesn’t include the contents of the building.

The burst water line “helped keep the fire in check until our guys could get up there and find it,” he said. “(The damage) could have been a lot worse.”

Otherwise, “smoke kind of dispersed throughout the building and evened out,” Black said.

There were no injuries.

Investigators were still at the business Tuesday morning. The dealership couldn’t be reached for comment. Black said it was open for business.
