Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal has named December 10 the first “Day of Code,” aimed at encouraging students to develop computing skills and consider careers in computer science.

Officials with the Technology Association of Georgia say the event coincides with Computer Science Education Week. The website Code.org plans to offer an introduction to computer science, including hour-long tutorials.

Students also can win prizes for their school by participating.
