Dawson County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in locating two young men missing for two days.
Mason Cox and David Wood, both 20, were reported missing by their parents Thursday. They were last seen in the Fredricks Cove area off Ga. 400.
“David and Mason have been best friends for years. They are good boys,” said Ethelyn Geiger, David Wood’s mother. “They did what normal 20-year-olds did. They went night fishing that morning and were supposed to come back and hang out with us for the day after New Year’s. They didn’t come back. We haven’t seen them since. We don’t know where they are.”
Maj. Tony Wooten said the two have been missing for more than 24 hours. Their fishing poles are at their homes, he said.
According to the parents, Cox and Wood grew up on the lake, so it’s not unusual for them to go fishing late at night.
They left to go fishing at 3:30 a.m. Thursday. Wooten said the Sheriff’s Office has found evidence they fished from a neighbor’s pier.
According to the parents, the men left various items at Cox’s house before disappearing.
“My son left his cellphone, his wallet, the shirt he was wearing that night — it’s all in his room,” said Leanne Cox, Mason’s mother. “His car is here. He’s just gone.”
While Cox left his phone, Wood apparently took his, according to his mother.
“We think they may have been picked up by a friend,” Leanne Cox said. “They didn’t take their cars. Both of their cars are here. We don’t know what happened. It’s like they just disappeared into thin air.”
The Sheriff’s Office has surveillance video turned in by a neighbor that shows an unknown vehicle pulling up to the home before leaving a short time later.
“Right now, we’re still investigating the vehicle found on the surveillance tapes,” Wooten said. “The family is working with us. We have a potential description of the vehicle, but we’re not releasing that information at this time.”
The young men live within two houses of each other in the Fredericks Cove neighborhood.
No foul play is suspected, but it has not been ruled out, authorities said.
“There’s nothing other than that they got up to go fishing and at that point they haven’t been seen since,” Wooten said. “We’ve got nothing to show that any foul play was involved.”
At a press conference Friday, both mothers reached out to their sons and said they are holding onto hope they are just out of touch.
“These are strong kids. They are smart. Something stupid has just happened,” Cox said. “Everybody is here for you. Nothing is going to happen. If anything is wrong, don’t worry, we’re here to support you. We’re here.”
“David, Mason, if you can hear this, please call somebody,” Geiger said. “We’re very worried about you. We just want to find our boys.”
