A Gainesville man killed at the Atlanta Street Apartments June 15 suffered a gunshot wound to the head, Hall County Coroner Marion Merck said Tuesday.

Phillip Ronald Smith, 55, was found unresponsive outside of the apartments by the Gainesville Police around 11:30 p.m.

The coroner and police are treating the case as a homicide. No information was available on how many shots were fired or the number of gunshot wounds.

Smith graduated from Gainesville High School and played on the 1978 state championship baseball team.

Police did not have any updates in the case or information about possible suspects.
