A late afternoon wreck on Ga. Highway 365 Tuesday left a Habersham County man dead and backed up traffic on the highway’s northbound lanes for about two hours.

Harry Lamar Dodson, 63, of Cornelia died at Northeast Georgia Medical Center Tuesday evening following the injuries he received in a two-vehicle wreck at a red light on Ga. 365 at White Sulphur Road, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Dodson drove his 1996 GMC Sierra into the back of a Palmer Trucking dump truck that had stopped at the red light in a northbound lane of the state highway.

Authorities originally blocked off both northbound lanes of traffic on Ga. 365 in order to land a helicopter that would have taken Dodson to an Atlanta hospital, but reopened one lane of traffic after deciding to take him to Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Hall County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Kiley Sargeant said officials decided to send Dodson to the Gainesville hospital, fearing that there was not enough time to get him to Atlanta and treat him for his injuries.
