Shannon Casas has been named managing editor of The Times, publisher Charlotte Atkins announced this week.
Casas, 32, has been with The Times for 10 years in various roles. Her new position makes her the No. 2 manager in the newsroom. She is in charge of guiding all news coverage in print and online.
“Shannon has proven her leadership and has grown into a confident and talented manager,” said Keith Albertson, Times editor.
A native of Gwinnett County, she is a 2005 graduate of Berry College in Rome. She first joined The Times newsroom as a copy editor, later became assistant features editor, then metro editor in 2009.
“Shannon has for the past several years been coordinating our local news coverage in a focused and thoughtful manner,” Atkins said. “She will continue to do so and now will also focus on shaping our multimedia strategies as we reach more readers across many platforms.
“She is a shining example of the next generation of news leaders, and we are blessed to have her at The Times as the second in command in our newsroom.”
Casas and her husband Brendan live in northwest Hall. They are members of Gainesville First United Methodist Church and are foster parents to two children.
