Petty Officer 3rd Class Nathanael Murray of Gainesville is serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Santa Fe, an advanced nuclear-powered fast attack submarine.

Murray is a 2010 West Hall High School graduate and currently works as an electronics technician. Navy electronics technicians are responsible for handling a variety of equipment, navigation and communications such as the sub’s radar.

Submariners are highly trained and skilled, only accepted aboard after rigorous testing and observation. Submarines have a demanding environment, and everyone must learn how the ship works and how to respond in emergencies to become “qualified in submarines” and earn the right to wear the coveted gold or silver dolphins on their uniform.
