Clermont residents who want to keep their garbage pickup will have to spend a little more for the service.
The Town Council voted Tuesday night to turn over its garbage service to a private contractor, Chase Sanitation Group of Cornelia, which will charge $12.25 monthly for the weekly service.
The North Hall town had been charging $72 every six months, or $12 monthly, for its truck to pick up trash every Monday morning, a service that also included recycling.
Chase’s curbside service includes a 96-gallon rollout cart. Residents will have to pay another $6 monthly if they want another cart. Plus, those who want bimonthly recycling pickup must pay an additional $2.50 per month, according to the company’s proposal.
Also, the company “will have the right to increase prices based upon the federal published cost-of-living increase rate at the annual renewal date of any contract,” the document states. “This increase will not be automatic but will be approved by the (town) government when requested, at least 90 days prior to renewal date.”
Clermont would handle billing on behalf of Chase.
The new service is expected to start after July 1, which marks the start of the town’s 2014-15 budget year.
Town Councilman John Brady said the town plans to evaluate Chase’s service six months after it starts “to see how everything is going.”
Brady said Clermont had to explore other options because its trash truck needed replacement and a new truck could cost $40,000 to $50,000.
Trash pickup is optional for the town’s 900 residents. The city has about 90 trash customers.
The current truck is kept at the town shop off Oxford Road and Main Street. The city has run its own trash service for about a decade or more.
“We use our maintenance guys and it takes them about half a day to do the work every (Monday),” Mayor James Nix has said.
In addition to saving money from not having to operate the service, the town will be able to direct the maintenance workers to other jobs, Nix said.
“We’ve got plenty for them to do,” he added.
