The legacy of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference is profound. Now, Gainesville resident Jeffrey Williams is hoping to relaunch a local chapter to fight for civil rights for a new generation of African-Americans. With Martin Luther King Jr. as its first president, the SCLC was a stalwart organization in the 1960s civil rights movement after its founding in 1957 following the Montgomery bus boycotts.
