Andrew Hathcock, a senior at Chestatee High School, was named the District 2 Student Teacher Achievement Recognition, or STAR, student Tuesday night.

He was named in February a STAR student of the Hall County school system. Hathcock will now compete in the state STAR event. A state banquet will be held in Atlanta in April.

The award was presented at a banquet for District 2 students in Dahlonega. District 2 includes Hall, Dawson, Pickens, Gilmer, Fannin, Union, Towns, Rabun, Lumpkin, Habersham, Stephens and White counties.

The STAR student must have the highest score on a single SAT test and be in the top 10 percent of students in his or her class.

Hathcock is the captain of the school’s robotics team. He also has played trumpet in the marching band for four years and is on the tennis team.

Hathcock plans to attend Georgia Tech and major in materials science and engineering.

He said he also has an interest in biochemical engineering and theoretical physics. He plans to get a doctorate and seek a job in one of those industries.

He is the son of Ley and Cherie Hathcock.

Hathcock chose Gary Martin, from the Da Vinci Academy, as his STAR teacher.
