Business briefs: UGA Small Business Center announces February classes

The University of Georgia Small Business Development Center has announced two courses to be offered in February.

QuickBooks Payroll will be offered 9 a.m. to noon Friday at the Gainesville SBDC office at 999 Chestnut St. The cost is $99.

The course covers QuickBooks payroll module, setting up payroll items, employee payroll information, processing payroll checks, and paying and adjusting tax liabilities.

A separate class, Passport to Export, will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 10 at Cleveland United Methodist Church, 112 Kytle St. The cost is $45.

This seminar is to educate participants who interested in finding the right market for products and/or services in the global market. Experts from the SBDC International Trade Division will provide valuable information concerning making the right contacts to go global. The class is also sponsored by White County Community & Economic Development department.

Saul's plans charity shoe drive
Saul's has announced a shoe drive to benefit Soles4Souls, the international footwear charity that delivers shoes to needy people around the world.

During the shoe drive, Saul's will be offering a 20 percent discount on new shoes to all customers who bring in gently worn pairs of shoes toward the effort.

The shoe drive begins Monday and ends Feb. 21 at the 100 Main St. location.

"At Saul's, we feel during these dire economic times that it is important to help less fortunate people with much needed shoes," said owner Lorry Schrage. "We hope each of our customers will bring in a pair of their gently used shoes to trade in for a discount on a new pair for themselves."

Nashville-based Soles4Souls facilitates the donations of both new and used shoes, which are used to aid people worldwide. The charity has distributed more than 4 million pairs to people in more than 70 countries.

Kohl's announces scholarship
Kohl's Department Stores plans to award nearly $350,000 in scholarships and prizes to recognize the selfless acts of more than 2,000 youth ages 6 through 18 who are making a difference in their communities.

To nominate a young volunteer for a Kohl's Kids Who Care scholarship, visit www.kohlskids.com. Nominations are accepted Sunday through March 15.

Two nominees from each of Kohl's 1,004 stores nationwide will win a $50 Kohl's gift card, and more than 190 of them will win regional scholarships worth $1,000 toward post-secondary education. Ten national winners will be recognized with $5,000 scholarships toward their post-secondary education.

Kohl's also will contribute $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on behalf of each national winner.

Kohl's has two Hall County locations: Dawsonville Highway in Gainesville and Spout Springs Road in Flowery Branch.
