The garden’s beauty doesn’t just show in its flowers and trees; it can also be seen in those who tend to it. More than 100 supporters gathered under the tall shade trees at The Smithgall Woodland Gardens, off Cleveland Highway in Gainesville, to attend a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday afternoon. The 168-acre homestead was donated to the Atlanta Botanical Garden in 2001 by Lessie Smithgall and her late husband, Charles Smithgall, founders of The Times.
