Man dies in I-985 crash after tire blows out

Update: A Waycross man died Wednesday after a blown tire caused him to lose control of a commercial truck he was driving.

About 7 p.m., Eddie Cooper, 40, and his passenger, Stacy Ramsey, 49, of Marietta, were traveling north on Interstate 985 in the right lane when the tire failure occurred, Georgia State Patrol Sgt. Major Patterson wrote in an email.

Cooper’s Peterbilt truck veered left and struck a Ford F350 driven by Brian Gilbert, 36, of Gainesville, before hitting a guardrail then stopping in an embankment, Patterson said. Cooper and Ramsey were trapped in the rig for an undetermined amount of time, Patterson said.

Both were extricated and taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center with serious injuries. Cooper later died at the hospital.

Gilbert suffered minor injuries and was treated at the crash.

Previous story: Northbound lanes of Interstate 985 are shut down at exit 22 following a wreck, authorities said.

The fire departments and law enforcement from Gainesville and Hall County were out at the scene around 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office said there will be major delays northbound on 985, advising people to be careful and use other routes.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the wreck.
