Authorities: Man charged with child cruelty
Officials say baby's injuries consistent with being shaken

A baby examined in an Atlanta hospital’s intensive care unit seemed to have been shaken, according to authorities.

Christopher Joe Medina, 34, of Gainesville, reported his 3-month-old son had stopped breathing Monday, and first responders stabilized the child’s breathing.

“Later on the same date, Medina and the baby’s mother drove the child to the fire station on Ga. 53 at Ga. 211/Old Winder Highway due to other symptoms,” Hall County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Scott Ware wrote in a news release.

The boy was taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite.

“The baby was determined to have suffered retinal hemorrhages and bleeding on the brain,” Ware said. “These injuries are consistent with a baby that has been shaken.

Medina was charged with first-degree child cruelty Wednesday, and he was booked in to the Hall County Jail without bond.

The child was transferred to a regular hospital room Wednesday.
