A former Gainesville Police Department chief suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest, according to White County officials.

Brian Kelly, 43, of Gainesville, was found dead Dec. 1 in a White County home. White County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Bob Ingram said there would be no further investigation at this time.

Kelly resigned from the Gainesville post on Aug. 29, 2014. He had most recently worked for the police department in West Point, Ga.

“We appreciate his service to the Gainesville Police Department and the citizens,”  Gainesville Police Chief Carol Martin previously said after learning of Kelly’s death. “Our condolences go to the family. It’s a loss they can never recover from. We’re there for them if they need anything.”
