Authorities detonate suspicious device near Holly Drive

Bomb technicians detonated a suspicious device near Holly Drive in Gainesville on Monday night, according to authorities.

The suspicious device was called in to dispatch after 5 p.m. Monday in the Sherwood Road area. Residents were evacuated and moved to First Baptist Church on Green Street in Gainesville, Gainesville Police Sgt. Kevin Holbrook said.

Before 11 p.m. Monday, Holbrook said the device was safely detonated and the area was cleared. Residents shortly returned to their homes.

“The device will be analyzed by investigators,” Holbrook said.
