An Athens man attempted to steal more than $3,000 of lawn equipment from a Hall County Parks and Leisure facility on Barber Road.

Robert Wynn, 66, has been charged with eight crimes, including both felonies and misdemeanors, for allegedly stealing lawn and landscape equipment Friday, according to an announcement from the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies received a report of a theft in progress about 5:30 p.m. and were given a vehicle description, tag number and direction of travel. Law enforcement caught up with the vehicle, and its driver stopped the car and fled into nearby woods, according to sheriff’s office spokesman Stephen Wilbanks.

The driver was pursued on foot and caught “without further incident,” according to Wilbanks. The lawn equipment and other property found in the vehicle were identified by a Parks and Leisure employee.

Wynn has been charged with burglary, felony theft by taking, possession of tools for the commission of a crime, criminal trespass, misdemeanor obstruction of an officer, driving with a suspended license, driving without insurance and driving without a license plate or with a plate designed to conceal or misrepresent.
