Assault suspect still missing following afternoon chase

Authorities have called off a search for a man wanted in connection with a reported assault this morning southeast of Gainesville.

Cary Hopkins, a 29-year-old white man, is wanted for aggravated assault and other outstanding warrants in surrounding counties, according to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.

He is described as 6 feet tall and weighing 275 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes.

Hopkins and Teresa Bruce, 29, are suspected of assaulting a woman in an incident Monday morning in the 1300 block of Richard Avenue. The two had left the home when deputies responded to the call at 11:15 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office reported.

Gainesville Police later found the suspects standing in a ditch on the side of Interstate 985 when responding to a 1 p.m. call about two suspicious people. The Sheriff’s Office reported when Gainesville officers responded to the call, the two suspects ran.

Police apprehended Bruce and connected her with the incident earlier in the day, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Bruce faces a battery charge and had an outstanding probation warrant, according to the Sheriff’s Office. She has been taken to the Hall County Jail.

Hall County K-9 units and warrant deputies with the assistance of the police department and Georgia State Patrol air searched unsuccessfully for Hopkins.
