Is there asbestos in the old Regions building?

The former Regions Bank building at 111 Green St. in downtown Gainesville no longer has asbestos, according to its new owner.

Jonathan Collins, president of Gainesville-based Capstone Property Group LLC, said the asbestos was cleared out a few years ago by the previous owner. Capstone recently purchased the property with plans to develop it into a 50-room, privately owned boutique hotel.

The building has been mostly vacant with some rentals since 2011, when 111 Green Street LLC, a group of investors, purchased the property. The building began as First National Bank in 1964, followed by Regions in the 1990s.

Collins said details about the project and its design will be available in coming weeks.
