National Weather Service meteorologists are calling for a 38-degree low for today and a high of only 53 degrees. Frigid temperatures come on the heels of a warm weekend with highs in the upper 60s.

Mike Griesinger, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, said icy roads are not likely to result from lows today, but near-freezing temperatures could garner a mix of rain, snow or sleet in areas north of Gainesville such as Blairsville.

"Even in Gainesville, I don’t think you can rule out a flurry or two, especially (this) morning," Griesinger said.

Due to fluctuating temperatures, accumulation of snow is unlikely, he added.

Griesinger predicts a smattering of scattered thunderstorms for this morning, with sporadic 10 to 15-minute showers throughout the day.

Griesinger said bursts of cold weather are common in April, and spring freezes during this period last year were responsible for some crop damage in the region.

"Cold snaps in April are normal because our weather pattern is in a state of transition from winter to spring," he said. "Chances are, this is the last cold snap we’ll have until October."

Griesinger added that April and May are typically prime months in Northeast Georgia for severe weather, such as hail and tornados, but so far this April, it’s been pretty calm.

The cold weather will continue on Tuesday, with a low of 34 degrees and a high of 59 degrees. But temperatures are forecasted to return to seasonal averages on Wednesday, Griesinger said.

Wednesday morning should hold a low of 36 degrees, and temperatures should climb steadily to about 70 degrees by Wednesday afternoon.
