A man and a toddler were flown to the burn center Monday at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta for treatment of burns sustained in an apartment fire at Spring Street Apartments, across from Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
Gainesville Fire Chief Jon Canada said a 23-month-old girl suffered second- and third-degree burns on 70 percent of her body. A 61-year-old man had second-degree burns on his neck, face, arms and hands.
Late Monday, both were in critical condition, according to fire department officials.
Two others, a 38-year-old woman and a 3-year-old boy, suffered smoke inhalation and were in stable condition at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
Firefighters arrived shortly before 9 a.m. and found one person trapped by flames in a second story bedroom. He said officers from the Gainesville Police Department had rescued three of the victims by the time fire trucks arrived on the scene.
Canada said the fire began in the living room of the apartment at 1120 Jesse Jewell Parkway.
The fire was contained to the single unit and was quickly extinguished. Canada said the cause of the blaze remains under investigation. The fire resulted in a temporary closure of two lanes of Jesse Jewell Parkway for a half hour, creating a traffic backup in the area.
