Gainesville City Manager Bryan Lackey said Tuesday he hopes improvements can begin at Lee Gilmer Airport this summer.

Lackey said the Gainesville City Council will include funding in the fiscal 2018 budget for the upgrades to the airport’s terminal building and the runway, and will get reimbursed from federal grants for both projects. The new budget year begins July 1.

The council approved resolutions Tuesday to pursue a $500,000 grant for the terminal building work, and a $410,725 grant for the runway improvements. Both grants require a local match.
