Firefighters rescued two people from the second story deck of a burning house about 10:30 a.m. Friday on J Martin Road in East Hall.
Hall County Fire Marshal Scott Cagle said a neighbor was able to bring a 3-month-old baby to safety before firefighters arrived.
"There were temporarily three people that were trapped by the fire and smoke on a second story deck of the house: a male, female and a baby," Cagle said. "A neighbor was nearby and climbed up onto the deck and removed the baby. When firefighters got onto the scene they laddered the deck and removed the male and female before they started fighting the fire."
Hall County Fire Services has determined that another child in the home caused the fire.
"The cause was a 4-year-old playing with a lighter in the home in the basement where the fire started, probably around some cardboard boxes that were found in the area," Cagle said.
Others in the home, including the 4-year-old, were able to escape. The fire caused no serious injuries.
"The male may have gotten some first-degree burns to his back but it appears to be very minor," Cagle said.
The fire caused an estimated $30,000 to $40,000 worth of damage to the home, which is valued at $120,000.
"The house was unlivable. The Red Cross was called to the scene to assist the family members for lodging and some clothes," Cagle said.
