The Gainesville Fire Department rescued three cats from a house fire on Walker Street about 6:45 p.m. Sunday. No people were home at the time of the fire.

The fire marshal determined the fire originated in the kitchen and was contained to the kitchen in the 1400 block of Walker Street. Gainesville Fire Department Division Chief Keith Smith said the fire caused “heavy damage to the kitchen and smoke and heat damage through the house.”

Smith said firefighters “were able to locate and revive three cats from the residence. It appears the cats will be (OK).”
