Gainesville Police took two men in custody after Peach State Bank employees reported suspicious behavior when they got change at the branch on Academy Street.
“It was not a bank robbery. No one was hurt,” Gainesville Police Cpl. Joe Britte said. “Nothing was taken.”
The men were not arrested but were interviewed and then released by criminal investigators.
Britte said that while getting change, the men left and then returned to the bank.
A branch manager approached the men to ask if he could help them. One of them was “fidgeting” a witness told police. That’s when bank employees alerted police.
Police patrol cars swarmed the bank, and the two men were handcuffed. They were released after questioning.
“They had a right to be there,” Britte said.
This wasn’t the first instance of excitement at Peach State Bank this year. In April, a man handed a bank teller a note with his intentions to rob the bank. He left with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Police are still investigating that robbery.
“This bank has been hit before,” Britte said. “Everyone is kind of on edge.”
