2 still hospitalized after 3-vehicle wreck in Lumpkin injures 8

Two people were still recovering Friday at Atlanta hospitals after being transported there by helicopter Thursday following a three-vehicle wreck on Ga. 60 in Lumpkin County.The wreck, which happened at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday near the second entrance of the Achasta subdivision on Ga. 60, injured nine total.Georgia State Patrol Trooper Mark Cox said a northbound 1999 Jeep Wrangler was slowing to turn into a gravel parking lot for Appalachian Outfitters when a 2005 Honda Civic rear-ended the Jeep, sending it into the southbound lane where it struck a 2008 Mercedes Benz R350.Both the Jeep’s driver, Shannon Weeks, 29, of Gainesville and passenger, Carie Beth Frick, 29, of Stone Mountain were airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.Weeks was released Friday morning. Frick is still hospitalized but stable, Cox said.Sally Ann Patton, 57, of Missouri was riding in the front passenger seat in the Mercedes and was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center where she is still hospitalized but stable, Cox said.The driver of the Mercedes, Marian Reed, 52, of Gainesville was taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.“I just talked to Mrs. Reed and she said she’s recovering well, just a lot of broken bones in her leg," Cox said.Other passengers in the Mercedes were also taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center and include Reed’s husband, James Reed, 67, of Gainesville; Lancey Patton, 54, Linda Smith, 54, and Arthur Smith, 54, all of Missouri. The driver of the Civic, Stephanie Baker, 22, of Dawsonville was not seriously injured and is charged with failure to exercise due care and following too closely.“Lumpkin County basically called all their ambulances,” Cox said, adding that they also requested mutual aid assistance from Hall County.
