A 17-year-old boy walking along the train tracks in Jefferson was struck and killed Thursday by a freight train.
Authorities believe Juan De Dios Padilla Arellano, 17, may have been listening to music on his cellphone while walking along the tracks since he never looked up as the CSX train approached, horn blowing.
Jefferson Police Chief Joe Wirthman reported that no headphones were found but the boy's phone was still playing music when it was found in the wreckage.
Jefferson Fire/Rescue and Jackson County EMS responded at 8:15 a.m. to Lee Street at the train crossing in Jefferson, according to Jackson County Emergency Services Director Steve Nichols.
Jefferson Police Department and the Jackson County Coroner’s Office are investigating.
