10-year-old declared dead days after being pulled from Lake Lanier
Lake Lanier

A 10-year-old boy pulled from Lake Lanier near Margaritaville Thursday, July 11, was declared dead at the hospital Wednesday, July 17, according to authorities.

Georgia Department of Natural Resources spokesman Mark McKinnon said the child was declared dead at 1:58 p.m. Wednesday at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. The father is still in critical condition.

DNR Maj. Mike England identified the child as Ethan Chen and the father as Libao Chen, both of Hoschton.

Capt. Zachary Brackett wrote that, “The father noticed that the son had not surfaced and went into the lake to find him. He then went under water. Life guards and/or bystanders located the juvenile and started rendering aid. The father was then located and removed from the water and (given) aid.”

Brackett said the man is 30 years old and is the child’s father, but the captain did not provide any further details.

The boy was later flown to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is handling the investigation.
