Matthew McGowan, a World War II veteran and a Presbyterian pastor-evangelist who championed civil rights, died June 14 in hospice care in Gainesville. He was 97. The third of seven children, McGowan — known as Matt — was born in 1925 on a 20-acre tobacco farm in Greenville, North Carolina.
