Churches to mark Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter with different services in many ways
0408STATIONS
Members of St. Michael Catholic Church perform the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday morning in 2016 to hundreds visiting at Laurel Park. The church has used Laurel Park as the site for the performance since 2004 with rehearsals every Saturday and Sunday for three months.

Palm Sunday is less than 24 hours. It signifies two things for members of the Christian faith: It commemorates Jesus Christ’s triumphant arrival in Jerusalem, and it marks the beginning of Holy Week, or the remembrance of the son of God’s final days on earth.

Many churches will celebrate Palm Sunday inside their own sanctuaries or facilities by waving palm branches in the air. But during Holy Week, worshippers will join together in and out of their church walls to commemorate Jesus’ last actions as a man.

In South Hall, churches will come together at 7 p.m. daily for a weeklong ecumenical family worship experience at different sites. They are as follows:

* Monday: Grace Baptist Church, 4271 Mundy Mill Road, Oakwood

* Tuesday: First Baptist Church of Oakwood, 3780 Old Oakwood Road, Oakwood

* Wednesday: Christ Lutheran Church, 3612 Old Oakwood Road, Oakwood

* Thursday: McEver Road United Methodist Church, 3606 McEver Road, Oakwood

* Friday: Oakwood First United Methodist Church, 4315 Allen St., Oakwood

On Thursday, some area churches will have a Maundy Thursday service to commemorate the Last Supper of Christ with his disciples.

One day later, three Gainesville churches — Grace Episcopal Church, First Baptist Church of Gainesville off Green Street and First Presbyterian Church — will join together for a Stations of the Cross procession on Good Friday.

For those unfamiliar with Stations of the Cross, the practice marks 14 moments of Jesus’ suffering and crucifixion. Good Friday marks the Christian holiday commemorating the day Jesus was crucified.

According to the Grace Episcopal website (www.gracechurchgainesville.org/worship/holyweek.html), the Stations of the Cross will begin after the noon service at the church on the corner of Washington Street and Boulevard and end at First Baptist Church at 751 Green St. NW. In between the two, the procession will pause for readings and prayers along Green Street.

Return transportation to Grace Episcopal Church will be provided by First Baptist Church and First Presbyterian.

St. Michael Catholic Church also will perform its Stations of the Cross re-enactment. The annual event will be at 11 a.m. April 14 at Laurel Park, 3100 Old Cleveland Highway, in Gainesville.

The two days later, churches all across the city and county will celebrate Easter Sunday, which marks the Resurrection of Jesus.
