U.S. Marine Corps Pvt. Kevin L. Brakhage recently graduated from Marine Boot Camp in Parris Island, S.C.

His 12 weeks of training included close combat skills, marksmanship instruction and The Crucible, a 54-hour evaluation of a recruit’s physical, mental and moral fitness.

Brakhage is the son of Dennis Brakhage and Diane G. Cape, both of Flowery Branch, and is a 2010 graduate of Flowery Branch High School. He is now in infantry training at Camp Gieger in North Carolina.

U.S. Army Maj. Marc Young has been selected for promotion to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Young is 1990 graduate of Gainesville High School and a 1994 graduate of North Georgia College & State University in Dahlonega.

Throughout his military career, Young has served in various command and staff positions across the United States and abroad. He also is a combat veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Young is the son of U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class (retired) Robert and Malinda Young of Gainesville and is married to the former Dawn Randolph, also of Gainesville. They have one daughter, Brooke, 9.

Young is stationed in Washington, D.C.

Ruben A. Sanabria has entered basic cadet training at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., in preparation to enter the first academic year at the academy.

The training prepares men and women to meet the rigorous mental and physical challenges experienced by new cadets. Phase one involves orientation and training in the fundamentals of being a cadet. During phase two, cadets train outdoors living in tents while learning to function in field conditions. Cadets practice team work, cohesion and dealing with physically and mentally demanding situations.

Sanabria is the son of Evangelina Cheeks of Gainesville and is a 2010 graduate of Gainesville High School.
