Abigail Coleman of Gainesville has been chosen winner of the Hall County Chapter of Georgia Right to Life Oratory and Writing contest. The contest was open to all Hall County juniors and seniors. Coleman is a student at North Georgia Christian School. She will represent Hall County in the state contest in Lawrenceville.

Justus Stout from Gainesville, was among 75 students at Bryan College recognized for their achievement during the college's Honors Day. Justus, son of Marc and Pam Stout of Gainesville, received the Outstanding Senior in Politics and Government award and the Robert and Nancy Spoede Sanctity of Human Life Award for his efforts on behalf of the pro-life movement.

Each year Bryan presents scholarships, departmental awards and other leadership honors to students who have distinguished themselves during their academic career.

Cumming resident Ashley Tolland, an occupational therapy major at Brenau University, received the Baxter-Bryan Award, the university's highest academic award for students. Tolland is a rising senior at Brenau.

Tolland, selected from the top five students of the residential Women's College in Gainesville after a rigorous application process involving faculty, staff, trustees and others, will receive full scholarship, including tuition, books, fees and room and board, for her senior year, about a $30,000 value. She has maintained a 4.0 grade-point average for her three years at Brenau and, like prior Baxter-Bryan scholars, is engaged in campus activities and community service.

The Forsyth Central High School graduate is a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and the Golden Tigers' cross country team.

Outstanding Georgia Southern University students were recognized at the annual Honors Day Ceremony held recently on the university's Statesboro campus. Area students recognized included Elizabeth Agee from Buford, who received the Outstanding Scholar Graduating Senior award; Rachael Parr from Buford, who received the Biology Award; Natasha Martin from Flowery Branch, who received the George R. and Emma T. Kelly Scholarship.

Matthew Kiel of Gainesville has been named to the dean's list for the winter quarter at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. Kiel is the son of Jeffrey and DiAnn Kiel of Gainesville and a 2009 graduate of Chestatee High School.

Lindsay Cannon of Gainesville was recently inducted into the Berry College chapter of Sigma Delta Phi, an honor society for students studying Spanish.

Mirkan Van Hintum of Gainesville was awarded with the 2011 Chick-fil-A National Leadership Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 for his core values and pursuit of excellence. Hintum is currently attending the University of Mississippi to study electrical engineering.
