First-, second- and third-grade students at Sardis Elementary School recently created Christmas, birthday and all-occasion cards to raise money for the Books for Babies program, which provides a new book for each newborn child at Northeast Georgia Medical Center. The cards were professionally printed and raised $2,500 for the program, which purchased 900 books

The Georgia Phi Beta Lambda North District Competition was held last month Woodstock. Four students from North Georgia Technical College competed in the event. First-, second- and third-place winners will be invited to the national contest in Anaheim, Calif.
Student winner were: Lorie O’Kelley, Franklin County, first place, Computer and Networking; Joseph Roberts, Habersham County, second place, Computer and Networking; Autumn Smith, Habersham County, first place, Telecommunications; Rossina Scott, Hall County, second place, Telecommunications.



West Hall High School students Tikurete Gebremariam, Neel Sharma, Seth Eaton, Jimi Zitka, Jose Ibarra, Mauricio Novelo, Alina Nguyen, Danielle Bechtold, Brooke Bagwell, Zach Clark and Krista Banda took part in the University of Georgia Scholar Weekend in Athens. Workshops included study of astronomy or anatomy



Darrell K. “Deke” Rochester, Jr. has been named to the dean’s list at Auburn University in Auburn, Ala., for the fall 2008 semester. He is the son of Darrell and Denise Rochester and a 2006 graduate of Lakeview Academy in Gainesville.



Lakeview Academy senior Heather Styles has won the 2009 Youth Citizenship Award given annually by Jackson Electric Membership Corporation. Styles performed more than 3,200 hours of community service during her high school years.
She will receive a $2,000 scholarship, a $1,000 grant to donate to the civic organization of her choice and an all-expense paid trip to Washington as a Youth Tour delegate this summer.



The East Hall High School Band received a superior rating at the recent District 9 Large Group Performance Evaluations. The three day event was held at Banks County High School in Homer.
Also, the Gainesville High School Crimson Chorus received a superior rating in Singreading and three excellent ratings for performance pieces at the Large Groups Performance Evaluation at Piedmont College last month.
