Local Marine honored as OCharleys Hometown Hero in Gainesville

For The Times U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. Michael Atkins, third from left, was named a Hometown Hero at the May 19 reopening of O’Charley’s in Gainesville. Atkins has been an active duty Marine since 2005 and was deployed to Afghanistan from 2009-2010 and January-November 2012. Atkins holds two Navy and Marine Corps achievement medals, a combat action ribbon and an outstanding volunteer service medal. He also served in the Marine Corps band and is a Morale Welfare and Recreation Officer for bases across the nation.
