The General James Longstreet Chapter 46 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy held an iron cross ceremony on Dec. 9 for John K. Moore, who was born in 1844 and died in 1926. The ceremony, held at the Poplar Springs Baptist Church cemetery, drew about 70 people. The Iron Cross grave marker is a military decoration to honor soldiers of the Confederate army. Moore achieved the rank of 4th corporal by the end of the Civil War.
The Jackson EMC Foundation recently presented a $15,000 check to Hall County Habitat for Humanity for its high school build program. The program provides students who would like to pursue a career in the construction industry with hands-on experience in all aspects of homebuilding. The money will be used to purchase framing packages for two houses, each of which will cost around $45,000 to build. Foundation grants are funded through the Operation Round Up program.

Navy Seaman Recruit Yozaira B. Martinez recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Martinez is the daughter of Irma S. Martinez of Gainesville. She is a 2007 graduate of Chestatee High School.
Navy Fireman Adam J. Stevenson recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is the son of Diane L. and Patrick R. Stevenson of Gainesville. Air Force Airman Robert B. Marchbanks has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Richard Marchbanks of Cedartown and Melanie Walburg of Dawsonville. He is a 2007 graduate of Cedartown High School.Army National Guard Pvt. Kenneth A.
