The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. has awarded a Community-on-My-Mind grant to the Gainesville Federated Garden Clubs for the Redbud Project, a model for Hall County environmental conservation.

The award will assist development of a native plant preserve that will promote awareness of Hall County’s biodiversity of native trees, shrubs and herbs and demonstrate environmental conservation methods.

The grant funds are being applied to the initial phases of the rehabilitation of the preserve site for eradication of invasive plant species that inhibit native plant species’ growth.

Made possible by a donation from the Georgia Power Foundation, the grant supports community work that benefits the public in keeping with the mission of the Garden Club of Georgia to promote beautification, conservation and education. As required, the grant funds have been matched by contributions from South Hall Kiwanis Club and the Azalea, Dogwood, Fleur de Lis and Gainesville-Gateway garden clubs.

The Gainesville Federated Garden Clubs Council is a member of the Laurel District of the Garden Club of Georgia and the Deep South Region of National Garden Clubs, Inc.

When talking to fans of World Wide Entertainments’ (WWE) Wrestle Mania about what it takes to be a citizen-soldier and the opportunities the Georgia Army Guard has to offer, it is not always necessary to be serious. Sometimes, the best way to reach people is to simply have fun.

More than 15 Army Guard recruiters and marketing specialists were working three different venues in the days leading up to Wrestle Mania 27 on April 3.

Sgt. 1st Class Jeff Martin, who works at the Guard recruiting office in Dahlonega, said an estimated 40,000-plus wrestling fans had already passed through the exhibition center, many of them stopping to get their photo made with the Georgia Army Guard-sponsored car of NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr.
