Leslie McAbee was rececntly inducted as a Peace Corps volunteer during a ceremony in Antananarivo, Madagascar. She will serve two years on the island, where she will teach English. McAbee is the daughter of Randy and Rita McAbee of Dahlonega and the granddaughter of Bertha Anderson of Dahlonega and Harold and Emily McAbee of Gainesville. She isa 2002 graduate of Gainesville High School and a 2006 graduate of the University of Georgia.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Brett J. Catledge has graduated from the E-3 Sentry Aircraft Aerospace Maintenance Apprentice Course at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma City, Okla. He is the son of Walter Catledge of Gillsville.

Army Reserve Pvt. Dustin S. Patton has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is the son of Nickie Stockel of Gainesville. Patton is a 2007 graduate of Johnson High School in Gainesville.

Army Spec. Keith A. Douglas has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is the son of Marilyn Douglas of Dawsonville. The specialist graduated in 2000 from Forsyth Central High School in Cumming.

Dennis Leland Taylor from Boy Scout Troop 11 in Gainesville has obtained the rank of Eagle Scout. For his project, Dennis did debris cleanup, revitalized drainage areas, leveled and landscaped an area on the side of the Atlanta Road Church of Christ located in Gainesville.

Meta Cronio, Barbara Stevens, Bea Fischer and Marcie Fletcher of the Colonel William Candler chapter of the Dauthers of the American Revolution recently attended Founders’ Day at Tamassee DAR School in Tamassee, S.C. The school was established 88 years ago as a home for children and young adults ages 5-18, whose lives have been interrupted by severe family situations. The group-home setting teaches the children self-worth, trust and life skills. For more information about the school, visit their Web site.

Pete Davenport and Paul Mousseau sorted through coats collected by the Little-Davenport Funeral Home Community Coat Drive. With the support of local residents, the business collected more than 300 coats for homeless shelters in Hall County and agencies serving the homeless, including Good News at Noon and the Gainesville-Hall County Senior Center.

Gov. Sonny Perdue recently spoke at an ecumenical Thanksgiving service held by Cumming Baptist Church and the Forsyth County Ministerial Association. The mass choir was directed by Dr. John Broman, North Georgia College & State University director of choral activities, and his daughter, Jessica, was the featured soloist.
