Rodney and Kathy Whitmire of Gainesville announce the engagement of their daughter Emily Carolyn Whitmire to Ryan Jay Smith, son of Donald and Heather Smith of Gainesville.

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of the late Hubert and Carolyn Floyd of Gainesville, and the late Dan and Pauline Whitmire of Gainesville.

She is a 2008 graduate of North Hall High School in Gainesville. She graduated in 2010 from Gainesville State College with an associate's degree in early childhood education. She is pursuing an associate's degree in business management from Gainesville State College.

The groom-elect is the grandson of Melba Smith of Gainesville, David Wilson of Phoenix, Ariz., and Terry Mason and the late Judy Mason of Lafayette, Tenn.

He is a 2007 graduate of North Hall High School in Gainesville. He graduated in 2009 from North Georgia Technical College with a diploma in electrical construction. He is pursuing an associate's degree at Lanier Technical College in Industrial Systems Technology.

The couple plan to wed May 5, 2012, at Eagle Ranch in Flowery Branch.
