John Carlton of Pflugerville, Texas, and Julia Eberhardt Carlton of Gainesville announce the engagement of their daughter Jennifer Katherine Carlton to Michael Lee Smith, son of Richard and Marilynn Smith of Athens.

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of the late Seaborn and Joyce Eberhardt, and the late Frances and Lee Carlton.

She is a 1990 graduate of Gainesville High School in Gainesville. She graduated in 1994 from Brenau Women’s College with a bachelor of science degree in psychology. She received a certification in early childhood education at Brenau University in 2002. She is employed as an ESOL teacher with Gainesville City Schools.

The groom-elect is the grandson of the late Lloyd and Helen Unger, and Estelle Smith of St. Joseph, Mich., and the late Charles Elbert Smith.

He is a 1994 graduate of Clarke Central High School in Athens. He graduated from the University of Georgia with a bachelor’s degree in theater, and a master’s degree in education. He is employed as an English and drama teacher by Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville.

The couple plan to wed Dec. 19, 2015, at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Gainesville.
