The Taste of Gainesville is adding two new elements to its annual event: a wine tasting and craft beer selection.

But co-chairman Duane Schlereth said the event from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, is a “must-attend” event for four more reasons.

“Wonderful food, a gorgeous setting with the view of the lake, live music and an opportunity to support our rowers,” he said, noting the Lake Lanier Rowing Club Junior League will reap the benefits of the event.

Proceeds  for the tickets will be used to expand the programs.

“We have a high school program, but we want to expand the program to reach more people,” Schlereth said.

Once their ticket is purchased, guests may taste specialities from more than 20 local restaurants on the plaza at Lake Lanier Olympic Park, 3105 Clarks Bridge Road, in Gainesville. Or they are welcome to sample food from all the restaurants.

“They’re only limited by their appetites and how much food the restaurants bring,” Schlereth said with a laugh.

Many restaurants have become regular vendors at the Taste of Gainesville since it started 17 years ago. Some of those include Bluefin Hibachi and Sushi, Johnny’s BBQ, Natural Juice Cafe, Midland Station Coffee, Skogies and others.

The event also offers newcomers to town a chance to find eateries that appeal to their palate.

“It’s a great way to try new restaurants and sample whatever suits your fancy,” Schlereth said.

Along with the restaurants, this year’s event will feature wine tasting and craft beer. The Vine and Cheese store and five wineries will be there, Schlereth said. Plus, Downtown Drafts will sell Left Nut Brewing Co. beers.

The only catch is the standard ticket doesn’t include wine or beer. Attendees will have to spend an additional $25 to sample 12 wines and receive a commemorative wine bottle. Craft beer will be available for purchase separately.

As visitors sample the food and beverages, classical guitarist Walter Biel will entertain the crowd.
