The talented dancers of the Gainesville Ballet Company are set to perform the ballet “Mary!” for the second consecutive year next week.

The ballet is based on the popular children’s book series, “Mary Poppins,” by P.L. Travers. Theatergoers may be more familiar with the songs from the 1964 Walt Disney film adaptation, but the ballet is composed with the same life and magic as the well-known soundtrack.

“One of the awesome things about this program is that Ms. Diane Callahan (the artistic director) takes kids from all different backgrounds and makes them into amazing dancers. They work endless hours and it is at a professional level of performance,” said Amanda Gorecki, director of marketing for the Gainesville Ballet Company. “Audiences are getting the chance to see a performance of the highest level put on by hard-working, salt-of-the-earth kids (who) come from right here in Gainesville.”

Performances are 7:30 p.m. March 20, 2 and 7:30 p.m. March 21 and 2 p.m. March 22 inside the Pearce Auditorium on the Brenau University campus in Gainesville.

Ticket prices range from $12 to $26, depending on floor or balcony seating.

Gainesville Ballet Company will employ the full force of its organization during the production, featuring nearly 70 dancers throughout its running time. The company performed “Mary!” last spring, but has brought it back to life for an encore.

The show has gotten a bit of a facelift with a new, original dance premiering in this year’s edition of “Mary!”

All dances are choreographed by Kassandra Newberry, an Atlanta-based freelance dancer and choreographer. She worked with the company last year and returned to complete the original new dance.

In addition to entertaining viewers, the show provides an opportunity for young dancers in the company to show their skills. Six repertory pieces including jazz, classical and contemporary will be performed before “Mary!”
