Ben Franklin once said, “Guests, like fish, begin to smell after 3 days.”
Sorry Ben, but “The Nerd” is crashing a party at Holly Theater and starts to stink almost immediately.
The merriment begins Feb. 20 with a “Nerds Rule” costume contest. Get your nerd on by putting on your dorkiest attire and attending the theater. Anyone sporting a Nerd costume receives a free soft drink.
If you’re judged to be the biggest nerd, you’ll win two season tickets to the Holly and an ultimate “Nerd” kit.
Following the costume contest, the thespians will perform “The Nerd.”
Set in Terre Haute, Ind., the play centers on Rick Steadman (played by Jesse McWhorter). The hopelessly nerdy and endlessly annoying man saved the life of Willum Cubbert in Vietnam. Cubbert, an up-and-coming young architect, has vowed to do anything for Steadman, but soon regrets his promise when Steadman unexpectedly arrives at Willum’s 34th birthday party.
As soon as Steadman shows up with his annoying accent and snorty laugh, the uproar begins.
“This Nerd is not like today’s conception of a nerd or geek,” director Michael Arens said. “This show is from the 1980s, so it’s more like the bumbling oaf, tactless, incredibly inept, irritating character who drives everyone crazy ...”
Performances will be Feb. 20-22, Feb. 27 through March 1 and March 6-8. Showtimes are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays, at Holly Theater, 69 W. Main St., Dahlonega.
The play is rated PG-13 because of some adult language.
