Staying active during a busy week can sometimes be a challenge. But the city of Gainesville offers several adults sports leagues to help them get exercise as well as hang out with friends.

Gainesville Parks and Recreation offers four sports throughout the year for adults: softball in summer and fall; basketball in winter; flag football in late fall; and various racquet sports, such as tennis and pickleball, offered throughout the year.

“We do our best to provide a variety of adult sports that meets the needs of community,” said Julie Butler Colombini, marketing/communications manager at Gainesville Parks and Recreation.

Team sports are a good way for area companies and churches to promote teamwork and spirit, Colombini said.

“It is also a great excuse for friends to make time for each other,” she said. “Adult athletics have a tremendous health benefit as well and are a break from a regular fitness workout.”

Hank Heffner, an athletic program manager for Gainesville, said adult sports leagues are also a way for people to remain active and playing the sports they grew up playing.

“(People) grew up playing baseball and softball and when they graduate high school that’s just kind of the next step in life, to continue the recreation and fellowship with other people,” Heffner said.

Mens, coed and church leagues for softball are available. Flag football is open to men and women, although there’s only been a few women who have ever signed up.

Mens and women’s basketball leagues are also available. However, Heffner said in his 27 years in his position he’s never got enough women to actually have a women’s league.

All participants must be ages 18 and older to participate.
