With a wave of his wand, Richard L. Petty orchestrates more than 50 musicians to blend their instruments into a single sound known as the Believers Band.

Now those same musicians will perform a concert to honor Petty. The Believers Band will present “Themes Like Old Times, a Tribute to Richard L. Petty” as its spring concert.

The free concert will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 23, at Gainesville First United Methodist Church at 2780 Thompson Bridge Road in Gainesville. A reception will follow.

Petty is one of the six co-founders of the band, including Dr. Lee Martin, Bill Clements, Muryle Shoemaker, Sue Tibbets and Dr. John Darden.

From 2002-2017, he has been the Believers Band music director and conductor. During his tenure, the band has grown from the original five members to 50-plus musicians thanks to Petty’s leadership.
